b. Stephen K. Gadd, 4 September 1945, Rochester, New York, USA. Gadd was taught the drums by an uncle from the age of three: he enjoyed Sousa marches and worked with a drum corps. He spent two years at Manhattan's School of Music before going on to Eastman College in Rochester after which he was drafted into the army and spent three years in an army band. His first professional work was with Chuck Mangione before he joined Chick Corea's Return To Forever in 1975. Corea described him as bringing "orchestral and compositional thinking to the drum kit while at the same time having a great imagination and a great ability to swing".
