Formed in Seattle, Washington, USA, in 1985, Sanctuary comprised Warrel Dane (vocals), Lenny Rutledge (guitar, vocals), Sean Blosl (guitar, vocals), Jim Sheppard (bass) and Dave Budbill (drums, vocals). Through two early demo tracks included on a low-budget compilation, Northwest Metal Fest, the band attracted the attention of Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine, who offered to oversee their next recordings. With this recommendation behind them the band signed to Epic Records and Mustaine was duly enlisted as producer. Refuge Denied introduced Sanctuary's somewhat basic thrash sound, one of great intensity but with little direction or scope. After touring with Megadeth the band offered the slightly superior Into The Mirror Black, but broke up shortly afterwards. Dane and Sheppard subsequently formed the power metal act, Nevermore.
