GEORGE DUKE
From the early 1970s on, composer/keyboardist/producer George Duke made inroads in rock, jazz, R&B, and pop. A jazz-schooled pianist, he joined Frank Zappa's band in 1970, where he began using synthesizers. His subsequent solo work included pioneering excursions into fusion as well as some highly influential pop/R&B recordings that made Duke something of a star in the late '70s. Along the way, he's produced countless albums, by everyone from Al Jarreau to Anita Baker, and his funky '70s synthesizer riffs have been sampled by scores of R&B and hip-hop artists.
