dog's eye view
Dog's Eye View is the 90s USA band spearheaded by noted solo performer Peter Stuart (b. New York City, New York, USA), a regular support act to artists such as Counting Crows and Tori Amos. Stuart began playing seriously while studying in Chicago, playing with a number of bands as well as spending six months in Scotland. He moved back to New York in 1993, and began to establish his reputation as a solo performer. Touring with the Counting Crows over a sustained period, he subsidised his existence with over 6,000 sales of his demo tape. On Dog's Eye View's 1995 debut for Columbia Records, Stuart was joining by a "shifting ensemble" of supporting musicians, including long-term collaborator John Abbey (bass), Oren Bloedow (guitar) and Alan Bezozi (drums). The group's title was taken from the view Stuart had enjoyed while living in a cramped downtown basement in Chicago. Happy Nowhere was produced by Jimbo Barton alongside Stuart, and recorded in a "haunted house" in Woodstock, New York. The self-penned songs were initially recorded as solo demos with the accompanying musicians invited to build on these foundations. Stuart's natural musicality and emotionally involved songwriting worked best on lyrics such as "Everything Falls Apart", "Waterline" and "I Wish I Was Here", songs which accrued strong reviews throughout the USA press.
