Cry Of Love
These US retro-rockers began life in 1989 on the local covers circuit around Raleigh, North Carolina, as a trio of Audley Freed (guitar), Robert Kearns (bass) and Jason Patterson (drums), but did not enjoy any real success until the arrival of vocalist/guitarist Kelly Holland. Cry Of Love (a name taken from a Jimi Hendrix album) quickly signed major recording and management agreements in the wake of his arrival. Their 1993 debut Brother was a classic slice of soulful hard rock, with a sound akin to Free and Bad Company enhanced by atmospheric live takes. Holland produced a performance worthy of Paul Rodgers in his heyday, while the inevitable Hendrix comparisons were heightened by Freed's tasteful lead work. With the success of the Black Crowes reawakening interest in classic rock styles, Cry Of Love's popularity leapt; the superb "Peace Pipe" reached number 1 on the US Billboard Album Rock Track chart, while the band produced a series of dazzling live performances on the road with Robert Plant, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and ZZ Top. In addition, they continued their own heavy touring schedule, where they freely jammed on extended versions of album material, and preceded their second UK tour with a well-received second stage spot at the 1994 Donington Festival.
