Nine Black Alps
This Manchester, England-based quartet emerged in 2004 with a sound rooted at least a decade earlier in the angst-ridden, melodic hard rock dynamics of the Seattle-based grunge movement (at times they sound uncannily like the Foo Fighters). After a number of early line-up changes, the band's personnel coalesced around Sam Forrest (vocals/guitar), David Jones (guitar), James Galley (drums) and Martin Cohen (bass). Their unusual name was lifted from a poem by American poet Sylvia Plath. The quartet's four-track demo CD served notice of their intent, drawing a number of A&R men to subsequent concerts, and after only a handful of live appearances they signed a short-term recording contract with Melodic Records. Their debut single, the raging, melodic "Cosmopolitan" reached the UK Top 50 in October 2004 and shortly afterwards the band signed a new contract with major label Island Records. Their first widely available release, the thrilling "Shot Down", followed in March 2005 and saw the band creeping into the Top 30. A third single, "Not Everyone", preceded the release of the band's debut album, Everything Is.
