The Sleepy Jackson
Psych pop band from Perth, Australia, formed by mercurial singer-songwriter Luke Steele (b. 1980, Australia) in the mid-90s. The Sleepy Jackson went through several incarnations during the latter part of the decade, with a low point reached in 1999 when the volatile Steele summarily dismissed his brother Jesse and long-time bass player Mat O'Connor. By this point the band had released two well-received singles, built up a loyal following, and were on the verge of signing a major label recording contract. It was then that Steele experienced what he termed a "renewal', cleaning up his act and vowing to bring his vision for the Sleepy Jackson to fruition. Justin Burford (guitar), Rodney Aravena (bass), and Malcolm Clark (drums) completed the third incarnation of the band, with their first major label release coming in the shape of 2002"s excellent Caffeine In The Morning EP. The Let Your Love Be Love EP confirmed the promise of the earlier releases, brewing acid pop, folk rock, and bluegrass into a scintillating mix. Tracks from both EPs were collected on the following year's self-titled mini-album. The long-playing Lovers was released in July.
