The Clark Sisters
This pioneering modern gospel group was formed in 1970 by Jacky Clark (b. Jacqueline Lenita Cullum, 1948, Detroit, Michigan, USA), Elbernita "Twinkie" Clark (b. 26 August 1955, Detroit, Michigan, USA), Dorinda Clark (b. 19 October 1957, Detroit, Michigan, USA), Karen Clark (b. 1960, Detroit, Michigan, USA), and Denise Clark (b. Detroit, Michigan, USA). The daughters of renowned gospel choir director Mattie Moss Clark, the sisters were singing in church from an early age. They began recording as a unit in the early 70s, releasing a string of independent albums on the Billmo Records and Sound Of Gospel Records labels. The concert set "Is My Living In Vain" (1980) was the first Clark Sisters release to top the Billboard Gospel chart, while the studio follow-up "You Brought The Sunshine' (1981) spawned a sizeable club hit with the title track. The sisters" vocal stylings shared many similarities with secular funk and soul acts, lending their music a contemporary edge lacking in many of their gospel counterparts.
