Bob Belden
b. 31 October 1956, Charleston, South Carolina, USA. An accomplished tenor saxophonist, Belden played in college bands before joining Woody Herman for a spell. In New York in the 80s he was in demand as a sideman (on keyboard and synthesizers in addition to his main instrument) and, increasingly, for his talents as an arranger. Towards the end of the decade he led his own big band and among his regular sidemen was Tim Hagans. In the 90s he was frequently engaged as a producer, arranger and musical director for Columbia Records' Legacy series and for the Verve Records, GRP Records, Atlantic Records and Criss Cross labels. He was extensively involved in Blue Note Records' "cover" series in the later years of the decade. Among these are sets with featured artists such as Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves and Hagans, which displayed an offbeat liking for exploring the work of composers not usually associated with the jazz repertoire. Released under the banner "Bob Belden Presents" are samplings of the compositions of Sting, Beatles, Carole King and classical composer Giacomo Puccini. He has also written numerous liner notes for albums.
