Divinyls
Led by the provocative Chrissie Amphlett (b. Christina Amphlett, 25 October 1960, Geelong, Australia), whose songwriting with guitarist Mark McEntee (b. Australia) formed the basis of the band, this Australian unit recorded some excellent work in a career spanning over 15 years. Amphlett's sexy image complemented the mesmerizing urgency of the music, and the band was guaranteed the audience's undivided attention. Amphlett, who had previously worked with country rock band One Ton Gypsy, met McEntee in Sydney in early 1980, and the duo began working as the Divinyls shortly afterwards. They were joined by a number of local musicians, including former Air Supply bass player Jeremy Paul. Their first mini-album was written for the 1982 movie Monkey Grip; it produced the Australian Top 10 single "Boys In Town" as well as the excellent ballad "Only The Lonely'. The former was promoted by a striking video featuring Amphlett cavorting provocatively in a school uniform and fishnet stockings. Signing with the UK label Chrysalis Records, the Divinyls" first album Desperate was a hit in Australia. Several hit singles and extensive touring bridged the gap to What A Life! (1985), which was greeted enthusiastically; however, the sales did not match the reviews. Later material, with the exception of the next single "Pleasure And Pain", did not compare well with their earliest work.
