Los Kumbia Kings
Playing a heady mixture of cumbia (the national music of Colombia), hip-hop and R&B, the eight-year career of Los Kumbia Kings was fuelled by the artistic tension between producer/writers A.B. Quintanilla III (b. Abraham Isaac Quintanilla, 13 December 1963, Toppenish, Washington, USA) and Cruz Mart¡nez. Quintanilla had previously worked with his sister, Tejano singer Selena, but following her murder in 1995 he withdrew from music for a period. He teamed up with Mart¡nez in 1999 to form Los Kumbia Kings. The band enjoyed considerable commerical success with albums such as Amor, Familia Y Respeto " (1999) and Shhh! (2001), but was wracked by internal problems. Numerous personnel changes occurred, bringing in artists such as vocalists Frankie J (b. Francisco Javier Bautista Jnr., 14 December 1980, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico) and Pee Wee Gonzalez (b. Irvin Salinas), the latter becoming an overnight star at the age of 16. After disagreements with Martinez, including public wrangles and the release of taped intemperate and seemingly racist remarks, Quintanilla dropped out of the band in summer 2006 and formed the Kumbia AllStarz, taking Gonzalez with him. Later, Quintanilla won the legal right to use the name Los Kumbia Kings.
