Leon Parker
b. Leon Evans Parker Jnr., 21 August 1965, White Plains, New York, USA. Parker was influenced by his grandfather, Milford Tucker, a swing-era drummer. Parker played drums in church before joining a local youth jazz band, and was studying classical percussion at the age of 17. He moved to New York City where he became involved with Barry Harris' Jazz Workshop. Regular work at Augie's bar in Manhattan followed, with Parker gradually reducing his drum set, often playing gigs with a single cymbal. Recording and touring dates with Harvie Swartz, Shelia Jordan, Dewey Redman, Kenny Barron raised his profile, before Parker enjoyed a fruitful period as part of the Jacky Terrasson trio. Parker came to the attention of producer Joel Dorn, who produced his debut for the Epicure label. Subsequent sets for Columbia Records have demonstrated Parker's ability to create mesmeric music from his minimal set-up (cymbal, snare and floor tom), creating a rhythmic fusion of diverse styles. Musicians appearing on Parker's albums have included highly regarded contemporaries such as soprano David Sanchez, altoist Steve Wilson, tenor Mark Turner, trumpeter Tom Harrell, trombonist Steve Davis and bass player Ugonna Okegwo.
