stellastarr*
The seeds of New York City, USA-based indie rock quartet Stellastarr* were originally planted during the late 90s, when three college students, painter and actor Shawn Christensen (vocals/guitar), cellist Amanda Tannen (bass), and graphic designer and actor Arthur Kremer (drums) met while all were still attending the Pratt Institute of the Arts (in nearby Brooklyn). Although its members barely knew how to play their respective instruments at this point (let alone write formidable original songs), the friends formed a band called Ghistor. Second guitarist Michael Jurin joined in spring 2000, after relocating from Philadelphia to New York City (Jurin had previously been a member of an obscure local unit called Charlotte's Funeral). It only took a single rehearsal before the definitive line-up was cemented, resulting in a name change to Stellastarr*. A steady stream of gigs in downtown New York soon followed, and it was at one such performance that the quartet caught the ear of DJ/promoter Nick Marc, as well as renowned indie rock producer Tim O'Heir. The latter produced several demos for the promising young band, which made up their debut EP, 2002's Somewhere Across Forever, issued via Marc's Tiswas record label.
