Az Yet
Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, R&B vocal outfit Az Yet was formed by Dion Allen (b. 2 October 1970), Shawn Rivera (b. 4 November 1971) and Kenny Terry. Allen recruited Terry after hearing him sing while cleaning a room at the Wyndham Hotel in Philadelphia. They then set about trying to convince LaFace Records' president Babyface to sign them - Allen confessing to spending over $800 on phone bills during this period leaving snippets of the group's demo tape on the company's voice mail. In a final attempt to contact Babyface, they managed to pass a tape to his mother-in-law, Jacqueline McQuam. McQuam was so impressed by the group's synchronized harmonies and elegant, understated songwriting that she immediately offered to manage the group, who had now swelled to a quintet with the addition of Darryl Anthony (b. 6 September 1969) and Marc Nelson (b. Marcus Nelson, 23 January 1971, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA). Babyface signed the group to his label in 1995, relocating them to Los Angeles and writing and producing songs for their debut album. Several of the finished tracks were then remixed by Groove Theory's Bryce Wilson. Their debut single, "Last Night", provided an immediate breakthrough by topping the R&B Singles chart. The follow-up, a remake of Chicago's "Hard To Say I'm Sorry", reached the mainstream Top 10, but subsequent releases failed to build on this success.
