Calling
The chart success of this Los Angeles, California, USA-based rock quintet's 2001 debut, Camino Palmero, can be attributed to the rise in popularity of radio-friendly melodic heavy rock acts such as Creed, Train and Nickelback. Alex Band (vocals) and Aaron Kamin (guitar), both natives of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, began playing together as teenagers and quickly attracted a RCA Records development deal. They formed Generation Gap with some older local musicians to develop their live act on the SoCal scene, before recruiting Sean Woolstenhulme (guitar), Billy Mohler (bass) and Nate Wood (drums) and renaming themselves the Calling. The quintet first attracted notice in 2000 when they featured in the movie Coyote Ugly playing their track "Wherever You Will Go". Camino Palmero, named after the street in the Valley where the band grew up, was released in July 2001. The grandoise but excellent "Wherever You Will Go" broke into the US Top 5 the following year.
