Rupee
b. Rupert Clarke, 10 September 1975, Germany. One of the leading vocalists to emerge from the soca scene at the start of the twenty-first century, Rupee enjoyed mainstream crossover success in 2004 with the US hit "Tempted To Touch". Born in Germany to a Barbadian father and German mother, Clarke spent part of his childhood in England before moving with his family to Barbados in 1985. He started his music career in dancehall and received his first break when he won a Bajan talent contest. In 1995, he joined forces with Adrian Clarke and T.C. to form the Barbadian reggae band Coalishun. The trio enjoyed a number of ragga soca hits, including "Thundah" and the international success "Ice Cream". Rupee launched his solo career in style with the soca song of 2000, "Jump", and further hits followed with tracks such as "Insomnia", "Tempted To Touch" and "'Till Morning". His first two albums, Blame It On De Music and Leave A Message, maintained Rupee's high profile on the soca scene, while his third, thisisrupee.com, was released independently while he negotiated a recording contract with Atlantic Records. He followed his labelmate and fellow soca star Kevin Lyttle into the US charts in 2004 with a re-release of "Tempted To Touch". His major label debut, 1 On 1, was released in November.
