22-20s
Touted as the British answer to American blues rockers the White Stripes, the Lincolnshire, England-based 22-20s' main attraction is the guitar work of founding member Martin Trimble. He began to make a name for himself on the local covers circuit in the late 90s, performing as vocalist and lead guitarist with Crossfire and then Martin Trimble's Outside Help, joined in the latter by Glen Bartup (guitar), Dave Wheeldon (bass) and Rob Flanagan (drums; replaced by Mark Barrett in July 2000). The quartet began to make a name for themselves on the UK blues and rock circuit, performing at the Borderline Club in London and the Maryport Blues Festival. They took a short break in summer 2002 before Trimble and Bartup (who had switched to bass) re-emerged later in the year with a new drummer, James Irving, boasting a harder rocking sound to go with their new moniker (taken from the old Skip James track "22-20 Blues"). The trio sparked a record company bidding war with Heavenly Records emerging as the lucky signatory. The 22-20s made their debut in April 2003 with the 7-inch "Such A Fool", voted Single Of The Week by the NME. The six-track live mini-album 05/03 followed in October and was promoted by a US tour with the Kings Of Leon and Jet. The band's self-titled debut album was preceded in April 2004 by "Why Don't You Do It For Me?".
