Mekon
b. John Gosling, England. Mekon is the pseudonym used by Gosling whose first musical forays were with avant garde experimentalists Psychic TV. Via hip-hop and acid house, Gosling became involved with William Orbit's Bassomatic, and gave their 1990 UK Top 10 hit "Fascinating Rhythm" a remix as Sugar J. With a singer, Cleo Torres and a guitarist, Matthew Ashman, Gosling formed the eclectic Agent Provocateur. Continuing to make his own instrumental hip-hop as Mekon, Gosling released "Phatty's Lunchbox" which attracted the attention of Wall Of Sound's Mark Jones who signed Gosling for his second release. "Mekon's Revenge" featured the voice of "Mad' Frankie Fraser, a notorious 60s gangster from London's East End, who worked for the Kray Twins" rivals, the Richardsons. Gosling had met Fraser at a bus stop and the result was the single, a brooding piece of hip-hop with Fraser's voice edited and looped over the music.
