Dogs Die In Hot Cars
Based in Glasgow, Scotland, the excruciatingly named Dogs Die In Hot Cars were one of a string of bands to emerge in 2004 that took direct inspiration from the UK new wave scene of the early 80s. Craig Macintosh (guitar/vocals), Gary Smith (guitar/vocals), Lee Worrall (bass) and Laurence Davey (drums) grew up in the home of Scottish golf, St. Andrews, and began playing cover versions together in their first band. They relocated to Glasgow in 2001, recruiting Ruth Quigley (keyboards/vocals) along the way and adopting their new moniker. Their first single, "I Love You 'Cause I Have To", an upbeat ska pop song, was released on the independent label Radiate in summer 2003. A near disaster followed shortly afterwards when lead singer Macintosh was electrocuted on stage at the Cotton Club in Dundee. Macintosh and the band bounced back to sign a major label recording contract with V2 Records. They made their debut for the label in January 2004 with the limited edition Man Bites Man EP. The quintet recorded songs for their debut album with veteran 80s producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, providing further fuel for detractors who noted the lineage of some of the band's quirky indie pop melodies and Macintosh's vocal similarities to Andy Partridge of XTC. The single, "Godhopping', broke into the UK Top 30 in May 2004, serving as a taster for Dogs Die In Hot Cars" debut, Please Describe Yourself.
