J-Kwon
b. Jerrell Jones, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Although his debut single, "Tipsy", quickly found its way into the Billboard Top 5 in the USA at the start of 2004, rapper J-Kwon's life had been a struggle prior to this success. Originating from St. Louis, Missouri, J-Kwon left home at the age of 12 to pursue a hip-hop career. Sleeping in cars or on friend's couches, he honed his rhyming skills by battling with other local MCs at night. After one such event J-Kwon was attacked by a rival MC and his crew leaving the young rapper with a broken jaw and disfigured with misaligned rows of teeth. To support himself during this time, J-Kwon resorted to selling drugs (and toting a gun for protection), before his rhyming skills caught the attention of Arista Records head L.A. Reid. Still a teenager at the time of his signing to Arista, J-Kwon wrote the aforementioned "Tipsy", a song that included a few observations the youngster picked up of watching grown-ups stumbling drunk out of clubs, which preceded the release of his debut, Hood Hop, in 2004. Produced by Nelly associates the Track Boyz and J-Kwon himself, the album featured guest spots by the local rap outfit, St. Lunatics.
