Minus
Described as "noisy boys" by themselves and "Iceland's hardest band ever" by their label Smekkleysa, rock quintet Minus (pronounced "me noose"), attempt to craft metal and hardcore into new shapes. Inspired by bands such as Metallica, Guns N'Roses, Converge and Refused, Krummi (vocals), Frosti (guitar), Bjarni (guitar), Johnny (bass) and Bjossi (drums) formed Minus in 1998 with their stated aim to create "disgusting music'. The band described their debut, 1999"s Hey Johnny!, as "a straight-up metal/hardcore album", but perhaps unexpectedly also admitted the influence of electronic noise artists on their music. Intriguingly, their follow-up, Jesus Christ Bobby, was produced by noise artist Curver (who has been described as the "hidden sixth member" of Minus and who tours with the band as live sound mixer and "noise maker") and featured eccentric former Sugarcubes member Einar ™rn. According to the band, the album's unusual title was "just a part of the whole artsy-fartsy side of Minus. Words paint a picture in our minds and the title is a cool picture." Minus asserted the links to their homeland when they named their third album Halld¢r Laxness, after the Nobel prize-winning Icelandic author of the epic Independent People and The Fish Can Sing. The band admitted the album was more song-based but nevertheless still surprised with "Last Leaf Upon The Tree", a collaboration with Katie Jane Garside (formerly of Daisy Chainsaw). For the most part, the album was merely a quite good, vaguely left-field, heavy rock album.
