Tommy Shaw
After Styx broke up in 1983 former vocalist Tommy Shaw embarked on a solo career. Signing to A&M Records, he released Girls With Guns the following year. This proved a big disappointment to Styx fans, who had high hopes for Shaw, and were not impressed with the strictly average melodic pop-rock on offer. The pomp and ceremony of old appeared to have vanished overnight. What If followed the same pattern and was another commercial disappointment. Moving to Atlantic Records, Shaw teamed up with ex-Charlie vocalist/guitarist Terry Thomas. This produced Ambition and marked a return to form, both in the standard of songwriting and the singer's delivery. Rather than build on this and develop a successful solo career, he declared his intention to become part of a band set-up once more. Teaming up with guitarist Ted Nugent, bassist Jack Blades (ex-Night Ranger) and drummer Michael Cartellone, he went on to multi-platinum success as part of Damn Yankees.
