b. Joseph Linquito, 2 August 1951, Hackensack, New Jersey, USA. This rock vocalist first came to prominence in 1977 with the band Fandango, who played typical AOR music. The band also featured a guitarist called Rick Blakemore which, with hindsight, may have been a good omen. Turner's radio-friendly vocals graced all four of their albums between 1977 and 1980. In 1981 he was invited by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore to replace Graham Bonnet in Rainbow. Blackmore was looking to change the sound of the band and aim it squarely at the American market. Turner's vocals were perfect for this and helped to secure the band further airplay with singles "I Surrender" and "Street Of Dreams", but Rainbow remained more popular in the UK and the rest of Europe. Consequently, after three excellent albums - Difficult To Cure (1981), Straight Between The Eyes (1982) and Bent Out Of Shape (1983) - Blackmore finished the band and re-formed Deep Purple.
