Story Of The Year
This US emocore band can trace its roots back to the St. Louis, Missouri independent scene of the mid-90s. Dan Marsala (b. 3 November 1980, St. Louis, Missouri, USA) and Ryan Phillips (b. USA) played drums and guitar respectively for the Deftones-inspired local outfit Big Blue Monkey, recording a number of independent EPs with the original line-up of the band. Struggling to make an impact beyond the confines of the local club scene, the new millennium saw a number of personnel changes with Marsala moving over to vocals, Josh Wills taking on the drumming role, Adam Russell coming in on bass, and Greg Haupt (b. 9 October 1981, USA) joining Phillips on guitar. The quintet began to pursue a more streamlined emo sound and the change in musical direction coincided with a more vigorous approach to self-promotion. They recorded three EPs and built up a strong following in St. Louis, but in 2002 decided to move to Orange County, California to further their music career. An offer to tour with Goldfinger was a timely boost, and coincided with the quintet's decision to change their name to Story Of The Year after discovering a blues outfit was also operating as Big Blue Monkey. The band's new name was taken from the opening track on an earlier EP.
