Strapping Young Lad
Rock singer and guitarist Devin Townsend (b. 5 May 1972, New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada) chose Strapping Young Lad as his pseudonym for his solo career in the mid-90s. Previously he had worked with both Steve Vai and the Wildhearts, before both ventures ground to a halt. Possibly alienated by his experiences with volatile musicians, Townsend took matters into his own hands on 1995's Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing, including playing nearly all the instruments, and writing and producing the collection himself. This was a wide-ranging, esoteric collection, straddling industrial noise and semi-operatic, pomp rock at its extremes. Also included on this strangely affecting set was a cover version of Judas Priest's "Exciter". He set out on tour to promote the album with a backing band that included guitarist Jed Simon (b. 24 February 1964, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, who had played on the album), bass player Byron Stroud (b. 12 February 1969, New Westminter, British Columbia, Canada), and seasoned drummer Gene Hoglan (b. Eugene Victor Hoglan II, 31 August 1967, Dallas, Texas, USA). Townsend also found time to collaborate with Black Sabbath bass player Geezer Butler, and played on Front Line Assembly's 1995 album Hard Wired.
