Formed in 2003 in Santa Barbara, California by Dez Fafara (b. 12 May 1967, USA; vocals) and Evan Pitts (guitar), this US heavy metal band received greater critical acceptance than Fafara's former band, the much-maligned Coal Chamber. The music on DevilDriver's self-titled debut album paid testament to Fafara's wish to indulge in the more extreme side of the rock scene, drawing on black and thrash metal in a genre loosely dubbed "groove metal". Jeff Kendrick (guitar), Jon Miller (bass) and John Boecklin (drums) completed the line-up on the 2003 Roadrunner Records release, but critical reaction was muted.
