Nick Cannon
b. Nicholas Scott Cannon, 17 October 1980, San Diego, California, USA. Like his mentor Will Smith, pop rapper Cannon balances a recording career with one in movies and television. Growing up in San Diego, Cannon developed an appreciation of music early on when his grandfather gave him several instruments as a present. Cannon formed the local rap duo Da Bom Squad, which landed opening gigs for Montell Jordan, LFO and Smith. Cannon's music career was put on the backburner after he relocated to Hollywood at the age of 16, where he honed his comedic talents as a regular performer at renowned west coast comedy venues the Improv, the Laugh Factory and the Comedy Store (performing alongside big names such as Chris Tucker and Chris Rock). As a result, Cannon came to the attention of television producers for the US kids/teen network Nickelodeon, and became a regular on the All That show between 1998 and 2000. From there, Cannon was named co-host of another Nickelodeon programme, Snick House, that eventually resulted in Cannon getting his own series, The Nick Cannon Show. It did not take long for Cannon to make the jump to the big screen, landing parts in movies such as Men In Black 2 and Drumline. A solo recording contract with Jive Records was a natural career move for the burgeoning multi-media star, and his self-titled debut album was released in 2003. A mildly diverting collection of melodic pop rap, the album featured writing and performing input by stars such as Puff Daddy, R. Kelly, and Mary J. Blige.
