David Banner
b. Lavell Crump, Jackson, Mississippi, USA. Southern rapper Banner made his initial impact as a producer and as one half of the Mississippi-based Crooked Lettaz, one of the first rap acts to emerge from the state. Shortly after the release of the duo's acclaimed 1999 debut Grey Skies, Banner put his partnership with fellow rapper Kamikaze on hold to launch a solo career. His debut, Them Firewater Boyz, featured a loose confederation of southern rappers, including Kamikaze, Ras Kass, Scooby and Jay Da Groova, and was initially released through Crooked Lettaz' record company, Penalty Records. Banner's dissatisfaction with the label led to him taking over distribution of the record himself through his B.I.G.F.A.C.E. (Believe In God For All Comes Eventually) set up. Banner was rewarded for his enterprise when he landed a major label contract with Universal Records. His debut for the label, 2003's Mississippi: The Album, repeated the formula of Them Firewater Boyz, juxtaposing hard-hitting gangsta tunes with introspective reminiscences about growing up in the south. A sequel followed later in the year. Banner's 2005 release Certified was delayed following the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina on his home state of Mississippi. The album, which finally appeared at the end of the September, rewarded the rapper with the highest chart placing of his career. The single "Play" also reached the US Top 10.
