Franky Perez
b. Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Los Angeles, California, USA-based singer-songwriter Perez is a blue-collar rocker enamoured with heartfelt story-telling and good old fashioned rock 'n' roll. The son of Cuban immigrants, Perez meshes elements of his history with influences such as Billy Joel, John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen. His lexicon is one of clichs and platitudes about young men from the wrong side of the tracks, Spanish roses from Mexico and dropping dimes in the jukebox. Perhaps over-egging his working class origins, he bluntly named his 2003 debut Poor Man's Son. Re-iterating a similar point, this first album (recorded with his band, the Highway Saints) was issued in what its creator dubbed a "recession special", that is, 17 songs for less than 17 dollars. In truth, Perez's over earnest and prosaic songwriting failed to carry such a long album. Nevertheless, Perez's music has found him friends, with the album track "Love, Soul, Rock N' Roll" featuring Black Crowes' guitarist Rich Robinson. Even more famously, recording sessions for the album legendarily prompted a "jam" with former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr who was music-making in the same complex.
