The D4
The alt rock scene of the early twenty-first century spawned its share of garage rock revivalists, as bands such as the Strokes, the Hives, and the White Stripes stormed the charts, and helped pave the way for similarly styled outfits such as D4. Hailing from the North Shore area of Auckland, New Zealand, and inspired initially by Australian proto punks Radio Birdman, the band was formed in 1998, when guitarists Jimmy Christmas and Dion Palmer shortly after the latter's previous band, Nothing At All, had split up. By the end of the year D4 had expanded to a quartet with the addition of Vaughan Williams (bass) and Beaver Pooley (drums), and were performing locally on a regular basis. Barely a year after formation D4 issued their first recording, a self-titled EP via the indie label Flying Nun Records. Throughout 1999 and 2000, D4 opened for a variety of renowned acts visiting New Zealand, including Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Fu Manchu, and the Hellacopters, among others. Around the same time, D4 visited Japan and Australia for the first time (as special guests of Guitar Wolf), and even played the main stage at the annual Big Day Out Festival. A second EP, Ladies Man, followed in 2001 before work on their debut album got underway. The resulting 6 Twenty was issued in New Zealand in September 2001, but did not see a worldwide release until almost a year later.
