Liam Lynch
b. 5 September 1970, Kent, Ohio, USA. This Los Angeles, California, USA-based performing artist achieved cult fame in the late 90s as the co-creator of The Sifl & Olly Show, a variety show on MTV hosted by two sock puppets. Lynch grew up in Kent, Ohio, which is where he first met his future co-writing partner on The Sifl & Olly Show, Matt Crocco (b. 15 March 1971, Kent, Ohio, USA). Lynch and Crocco first began performing comedy skits as teenagers, and after pursuing different courses at Kent State University revived their writing partnership when they met up again in Nashville. Lynch relocated to England in 1995 to attend the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, where he was taught by Paul McCartney, George Martin, and Brian Eno. He continued to collaborate with Crocco by mail, creating the characters Sifl and Olly and building the foundations for their future show. In 1996, MTV Europe began showing short videos featuring the sock puppets, and by the time Lynch returned to America two years later he and Crocco had landed a contract with MTV America for a series based around Sifl and Olly. The half-hour shows built up a cult fanbase and the show's run was extended into a second and third series, although the latter was only broadcast online. Lynch enjoyed further success when one of the songs from The Sifl & Olly Show, "United States Of Whatever", became a belated radio hit and breached the UK Top 10 in November 2002 when it was released by the independent Global Warming Records label. Despite origins on a puppet show, many critics rated the single as one of the finest releases of the year. Lynch has released several CDs of his quirky solo material.
