Rhett Miller
b. Dallas, Texas, USA. Miller first came to notice as a founding member of the local alt country outfit, Old 97's. The band issued several critically acclaimed yet commercially underachieving albums, including 1997's Too Far To Care and 2001's Satellite Rides. Although Miller had already issued one solo album back in 1994, Mythologies (which was comprised of material dating back to 1989), it was not until 2002 that he attempted to launch a proper solo career, as he released The Instigator on Elektra Records. With the majority of his Old 97's bandmates beginning to raise families and wanting to take a break from the record/tour/record cycle, Miller complied, and assembled a set of songs that were rejected by the Old 97's over the years, but still of high quality. The Instigator featured musical input from producer Jon Brion as well as guitarist Robyn Hitchcock and noted session drummer, Josh Freese. Despite the album receiving more attention than any Old 97's release, Miller remained adamant that the band had not broken up. This was confirmed when he reunited with the Old 97's to record 2004's Drag It Up.
