Bacilos
This Miami, Florida, USA-based Latin alternative pop band was formed in the mid-90s by University of Miami students Jorge Villamizar (b. Colombia; vocals/guitar), Andr Lopes (b. Brazil; bass), and Jos Javier Freire (b. Puerto Rico; percussion). Despite naming themselves after a bacterium, the trio enjoyed success with their independently produced debut Madera, which was released in 1999. A major label recording contract with WEA Records was their reward, and further acclaim followed when their self-titled debut for the label earned the trio a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Bacilos featured many of the tracks from their debut and consolidated Villamizar's growing reputation as a refreshing new writing talent on the Latin scene. The trio embarked on a world tour with Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz as their album climbed to the top of the charts in many Latin American countries. The follow-up Caraluna received a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
