S.T.U.N.
Perhaps the best way to describe the music of the Los Angeles, California, USA-based S.T.U.N. is "perturbed punk pop'. The band, whose name stands for Scream Toward the Uprising of Nonconformity, formed in 2000, and comprises Christiane J. (vocals), Neil Spies (guitar), Nick S. (bass), and Bobby Alt (drums). Modelling their sound after mutual influences such as the Clash, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, and the Pixies, the quartet built up a local following just as the first wave California punk bands of the late 70s did, by playing any place, any time. Before signing with a record label, the quartet chose to record an entire album's worth of material with renowned indie producer Sean Slade. Moving to Boston, Massachusetts to record at Slade's Q Division Studios, work began on what became S.T.U.N."s debut. With a set goal of attempting to capture the energy of their live show on tape, the recording was completed in 40 days, as S.T.U.N. signed shortly after with Geffen Records during spring 2002. The ensuing album, Evolution Of Energy, was not issued until over a year later, after additional mixing by Paul Q. Kolderie (of Kolderie And Slade) and Andy Wallace.
