This Spanish vocal trio enjoyed the summer hit of 2002 with the ridiculously catchy "Aserej‚" aka "The Ketchup Song (Hey Hah)". Born and raised in the southern Spanish district of Cordoba, sisters Lola, Luc¡a and Pilar Mu¤oz are the daughters of renowned flamenco guitarist Tomate, from whence they derive their recording moniker. After deciding to form their own group, the sisters enjoyed immediate success when "Aserej‚" rose to the top of the singles charts throughout Europe and Latin America in 2002. Blending Spanish rumba, Latin pop and hip-hop (the chorus incorporates the lyrics from the 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang), "Aserej‚" tells the tale of Diego, a fashion conscious gypsy who makes up his own lyrics to a popular English song because he does not know the words. The track became a hit throughout the Spanish speaking market, and crossed over to the English language charts owing to its popularity in holiday destinations and a novelty dance routine that was reminiscent of the summer hit of 1996, Los Del Rio's "Macarena". The attendant album was dominated by four different versions of "Aserej‚", indicating that the trio was being marketed as little more than a one-hit wonder act.
