Elizabeth Cook
b. 18 July 1972, Wildwood, Florida, USA. Cook was born to musical parents who played and sang country music in bars and clubs both separately and together. As a small child she recorded songs, then at the age of nine sang with a honky tonk band, Southern Breeze. Many of this band's songs were written by Cook's mother. When she was 16, Cook's family moved to Georgia where she attended Georgia State University, studying information technology and accountancy. Meanwhile, she was also writing songs. After graduation, she took an accounting job in Nashville, Tennessee, and soon thereafter switched tracks, taking a job with music publishers Sis 'N Bro Music. She made demos of her own songs and began performing, including a gig at the Grand Ole Opry as "new talent". Cook drew a positive response from audiences. In part this was because her songs were couched in traditional terms overlaid with an awareness of contemporary trends and attitudes. These same qualities appealed to music publishers and more of her material began to appear.
