Sugarcult
This US punk pop band was formed in 1998 in Santa Barbara, California, USA, by college friends Tim Pagnotta (guitar/vocals), Airin Older (bass/vocals) and Ben Davis (drums/vocals). Adding guitarist Marko 72 (b. Marko DeSantis, USA; ex-Ataris) to the line-up, Sugarcult soon built up a cult following on the west coast, combining well-crafted pop melodies with healthy helpings of rock 'n' roll attitude and energy. To complement their live work the band recorded several lo-fi albums which they sold at their shows alongside homemade T-shirts. A recording contract with Ultimatum Records ensued, and the quartet entered the studio with producer Matt Wallace. Their mainstream debut, Start Static, was released in August 2001. The album drew comparisons to contemporary punk pop acts Blink-182 and Sum 41, although Sugarcult's snappy melodies also owed a close debt to 70s power pop acts such as the Knack and Cheap Trick.
