Amy Studt
b. 22 March 1986, London, England. First emerging in 2003 with the hit single "Misfit", this teenage rock singer was marketed as the UK's answer to the hugely successful Canadian artist Avril Lavigne. Studt was raised in a musical family in the seaside resort of Bournemouth, and began playing piano, guitar, and oboe at an early age. She began writing her own material in her early teens and soon came to the attention of Simon Fuller, the pop svengali behind the enormously successful Pop Idol reality television show. Fuller engineered a major label recording contract with Polydor Records, and hired several pop veterans including Cathy Dennis and Gary Barlow to help Studt write her debut album. In July 2002 she reached the UK Top 20 with, "Just A Little Girl", before enjoying even more success the following year with "Misfit". This melodic slice of angst rock fitted in nicely with the contemporary vogue for outspoken female rock artists such as Lavigne and Pink, duly receiving extensive play on radio and television and breaking into the UK Top 10. False Smiles contained hints of Studt's potential, but for the most part her voice was buried under the slickly produced and hackneyed work of her co-writers.
