A consummate tunesmith, British singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt can create expansive, dreamy popscapes with throbbing string sections, Bacharach-esque piano twinklings, and a voice that sounds like it might burst into sobs at any moment. He's also capable of switching gears and toying with sinister carnival-rock and harmony-laden power-pop. A former member of the band Snug, multi-instrumentalist Harcourt has been releasing solo albums since 2000, each one progressively more lush, complex, and enveloping.
