Shannon Lawson
b. 12 July 1973, Taylorsville, Kentucky, USA. As a small child Lawson taught himself to play guitar in a musical household, with members of his family regularly playing for their own entertainment. While in school he began playing in bands, mostly rock but while at college in Louisville, Kentucky, he played with a contemporary blues band. Later, he took on leadership of the band and after that played solo gigs in the city, eventually linking up in 1993 with a bluegrass band, the Galoots. The band proved to be very successful locally. In time, however, Lawson and his new wife headed for Nashville, Tennessee, where he played in bars and made demos that attracted attention to his skills as a songwriter. In addition to the central core of country music in his repertoire, it is clear that Lawson has also been strongly influenced by rock 'n' roll and while this appeals to certain sections of his potential audience, it is an obstacle with others. Lawson was signed to MCA Records in 2001 and his debut proved to be moderately popular although it was apparent that his eclectic repertoire divided buyers in much the same way as it affected live audiences. However, his original songs were strong and interesting and his powerful singing voice attracted attention not only of audiences but also of fellow musicians.
