Erick Sermon
b. 25 November 1968, Bayshore, Long Island, New York City, New York, USA. Sermon did much to revitalise the rap scene in the late 80s as one half of EPMD, a partnership he formed with fellow rapper Parrish Smith. The duo's aggressive, bass-heavy grooves and Sermon's lazy, monotone delivery proved to be an important influence on the then nascent gangsta rap scene. Following EPMD's split in 1993, Sermon embarked on a solo career with the excellent No Pressure. The album belied the widely held belief that Smith was the real talent in EPMD, as did Sermon's ongoing writing and production work with artists including Redman, Jodeci, Heavy D, Keith Murray, Shaquille O'Neal and En Vogue. Double Or Nothing followed in 1995, with Redman and Murray helping write, produce and perform a large portion of this rambling, sporadically entertaining album.
