Alisha's Attic
The daughters of Brian Poole, leader of the 60s UK beat group Brian Poole And The Tremeloes, Shellie (b. 20 March 1972, Barking, Essex, England) and Karen Poole (b. 8 January 1971, Chadwell Heath, Essex, England) grew up in Dagenham, Essex. The duo were signed to Mercury Records in 1995 after their demo tape was passed to Howard Berman. He was so enamoured of the tape's contents that he telephoned the duo's management company and immediately offered them a recording contract, on their own terms. In 1996, the sisters entered the studio with producer David A. Stewart to work on sessions for their debut single, "I Am I Feel". To promote it they embarked on their first national tour, with a full supporting band. They achieved an instant breakthrough in the UK charts, "I Am I Feel" reaching number 14 and follow-up single "Alisha Rules The World" reaching number 12. The sisters had spent over eight years writing songs together, ensuring a large stockpile of material for their credible debut album. "The Incidentals', a number 13 single in September 1998, introduced the more cohesive Illumina. The album benefited considerably from Mark Plati's production work, but stalled at number 15 in the UK charts. Thankfully, the duo elected to continue as Alisha's Attic and bounced back with 2001"s The House We Built, a confident and highly polished collection of mature pop.
