Sarah Harmer
b. Ontario, Canada. This folk pop singer-songwriter grew up in rural Ontario, and formed her first band while she was studying at Queen's University in Kingston. After playing with the Toronto-based Saddletramps for a period, Harmer formed alt-pop band Weeping Tile with guitarist Luther Wright. The unit made their debut in 1994 with a self-titled EP, and built up a local following based around the appeal of Harmer's folksy vocals and charming pop songs and Wright's guitar work. The band subsequently released two albums, Cold Snap and Valentino, before Harmer elected to concentrate on establishing herself as a solo artist. She made her low-key debut in 1999, recording a collection of country cover versions with guitarist Jason Euringer. Songs For Clem was meant to be a Christmas present for her father but ended up being given a limited distribution. Her debut proper, You Were Here, was released the following year on the Zo label. This eclectic album drew genuine praise from critics enamoured of Harmer's quality songwriting.
