Murphy's Law
Formed in 1985, New York, USA hardcore punk band Murphy's Law have endured a number of line-up shuffles over the ensuing decade. Jimmy "G" Drescher has remained vocalist and leader in all subsequent incarnations, though he has dropped his original sobriquet of Jimmy Gestapo. Other members on the group's 1986 debut, Murphy's Law, were Pete Hines (drums), Pete Martinez (bass) and Alex Morris (guitar). However, by the advent of their fourth album in 1996, Dedication, Drescher had been joined by Todd Youth (guitar), Dean Rispler (bass) and Eric Arce (drums). Part of this change was forced - the group having lost bassist Chuck Valle in a fatal stabbing incident in 1994. The group's debut album included a cover version of Iggy Pop's "I've Got A Right", which provided ample evidence of their influences. Subsequent efforts emphasized a predilection for what the group called "party lyrics", in preference to the more dour and earnest hardcore groups. However, with Dedication, Valle's death proved to be a significant impact on Drescher's songwriting, resulting in songs such as "Dysfunctional Family", "Don't Bother Me" and "Bitter". After numerous line-up changes and record company switches the band stabalized during the recording of The Party's Over. In addition to Jimmy "G" the band comprises Sal Villaneuva (bass), Eric Arce (drums) and Richard Bacchus (guitar; ex-D Generation).
