Mis-Teeq
This south London, England-based R&B vocal trio comprised Su-Elise Nash (b. 22 May 1981, Dulwich, London, England), Sabrina Washington (b. 27 October 1978, Harlesden, London, England) and Alesha Anjanette Dixon (b. 7 October 1978, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England). The three women met in south west London in 1998, with Washington and Dixon sharing a keen interest in dance and choreography, poaching Nash to be their lead vocalist. A fourth member, Zena McNally, left the group soon after their breakthrough, the hit single "Why?", an innovative crossbreed of R&B and clipped garage beats that established them as the leading female group in the UK garage genre. Much credit for the single remix that the trio used went to Matt "Jam" Lamont, who inserted the faster music. After the single reached the UK Top 10 in 2001, the other three asserted that Zena's departure was for the sake of "harmony and balance". Top 5 successes came through the singles, "All I Want" (produced by respected UK garage outfit Sunship), and the classy "One Night Stand" (a purely R&B track in its main radio guise). The debut album followed in the UK shortly after, and delighted most critics who offered comparisons to Destiny's Child, citing its sassy lyrics and smooth harmonies. On closer inspection the trio proved to be less virtuosic, instead boasting the energetic MCing of Dixon, whose vocal chatter decorated most of the songs. The trio called their distinctive style "UK Urban", with its fusion of smooth R&B sounds and bumpy garage beats. On "They'll Never Know", one of the tougher tracks on their debut, So Solid Crew members Asher D and Harvey lent a more aggressive edge to the music.
