Caitlin Cary
b. Selville, Ohio, USA. North Carolina-based singer-songwriter and fiddler Cary initially came to prominence alongside Ryan Adams in the highly regarded alt country unit Whiskeytown, although she adopted a much lower profile than the band's ebullient frontman. Following the untidy demise of Whiskeytown in the late 90s, Adams embarked on a highly praised solo career that hit commercial pay-dirt with 2001's Gold. Cary began recording her own material during this period, debuting in 2000 (the year Whiskeytown was officially put on indefinite hiatus) with the EP Waltzie. So-named because three of the five songs were waltzes, the stand-out track on the EP proved to be a cover version of Richard And Linda Thompson's "Withered And Died". Cary recorded the material with the help of Chapel Hill-based producer Chris Stamey and ex-Whiskeytown personnel Skillet Gilmore and Mike Daly (her main co-writer). The same musicians were also present on Cary's debut, While You Weren't Looking, alongside Mitch Easter and members of the Jayhawks and Superchunk. Former bandmate Adams co-wrote two songs and duetted with Cary on "The Battle", a track only available with the bonus disc which came free with early editions of the album. The follow-up, I'm Staying Out, was an even more impressive offering with Cary's songwriting attaining new heights of sophistication on tracks such as "Sleepin' In On Sunday", "Please Break My Heart" and "Cello Girl". Cary also records with Tonya Lamm and Lynn Blakey as Tres Chicas, and with country singer-songwriter Thad Cockrell.
