Blake Babies
Formed at Berklee College of Music in Boston, the Blake Babies helped to invent the template for indie-rock in the early 1990s: intelligent lyrics, simple arrangements, a dense jangly guitar sound, and sunny melodies with girl/boy vocal harmonies. By the mid- 90s, grunge had become mainstream and knocked this sort of aesthetic aside, but main songwriter Juliana Hatfield went on to a relatively successful solo career, and guitarist John Strohm and drummer Freda Boner also recorded in various ensembles. A brief reunion in 1999 yielded an album and tour, but all three members went their separate ways again shortly thereafter.
