A UK breakbeat production and DJing duo, comprising Lee Rous and Andy Gardner, whose energetic, quirky productions and skilful, pounding DJ mixes drew favourable comparisons with the
Chemical Brothers. Graduates in music and architecture respectively, Gardner and Rous met while working at Freskanova Records' west London studios in 1998, engineering and mixing
house productions. They both previously produced
dance music in various guises, Gardner having worked with the
Freestylers' Matt Cantor. Taking their unusual name from a porn magazine entitled
Plumpers, their first original production was "Plump Yer Butt". They then released "Y2K: Chunky Plumps" in 1998 as a pressing of 200 white labels before updating
War's disco classic "Galaxy" with their tough beats and analogue electronics. The subsequent singles, "Scram", "Electric Disco" and "Big Groovy Fucker" were acclaimed by the dance music press and were club successes. The duo's part remix/part original recording,
A Plump Night Out, released in 2000, was a critical and commercial hit and raised their profile considerably. In 2001, they remixed
Orbital's UK Top 30 hit "Funny Break (One Is Enough)" and supported them on tour. They have also remixed a track for
BT among numerous remixing credits. Another mix album, the double-CD
Urban Underground - The Breakbeat Elite featured tracks and mixes by artists including
Freq Nasty,
Meat Katie and the Freestylers. The duo continue to DJ, having held a residency at London's "Passenger Royale" night since 1998 and regularly appear at Fabric and popular breakbeat nights such as "Chew The Fat" in Brixton, London and "Krafty Kutz" in Brighton. Their sound is notable for its blurring of the boundaries between house and breakbeat styles.
