Angie Martinez
b. Angela Martinez, 9 January 1971, the Bronx, New York City, New York, USA. This popular New York DJ and hip-hop personality enjoyed a successful crossover to performing with her 2001 debut, Up Close And Personal. Martinez was raised in Brooklyn but lived in Miami for a while as a teenager, where she landed her first employment at a radio station. When she returned to New York she gained employment at the highly popular Hot97 station, and began working with the legendary Funkmaster Flex. By the mid-90s, Martinez had established herself as an in-demand DJ on the city's hip-hop scene. She made her first foray into rhyming when she shared vocal duties with Redman on KRS-One's single, "Heartbeat'. Although she subsequently appeared on several underground mix tapes, her breakthrough vocal performance came about on Lil" Kim's Grammy-nominated "Not Tonight". Martinez's appearance alongside co-vocalists Kim, Da Brat, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes at the 1997 MTV awards sparked a major label bidding war, which was won by Elektra Records. Her oft-delayed Up Close And Personal project, which featured a star-studded guest list of leading urban writer/producers and artists, was finally released in 2001. (NB: Not to be confused with the jazz vocalist Angelyna Martinez.)
