Creeper Lagoon
Melodic alt rock band formed in San Francisco, California, USA by former schoolmates Ian Sefchick and Sharky Laguna. The duo grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and began playing in punk rock bands while still in high school. Laguna moved to San Francisco in 1990 and began experimenting with his home recording equipment and a sampler. He was joined by a succession of Bay Area musicians in an early incarnation of Creeper Lagoon, issuing a series of low-key vinyl and cassette releases before being joined by guitarist and vocalist Sefchick on 1997's self-titled EP, which was released on the tiny Dogday Records label. Drummer Patrick Magnan and bass player Bush Bringleman were then added to the line-up, although Geoffrey Chisholm replaced the latter prior to the recording of their album debut, I Become Small And Go, which was released in 1998 on the Dust Brothers' Nickelbag imprint. Although rough and ready, the album drew the attention of several major labels, leading to a new recording contract with the DreamWorks label. Dan Carr replaced Chisholm on bass prior to the sessions for the band's second album, 2001's Take Back The Universe And Give Me Yesterday. The album's slicker sound was a testament to the work of several producers employed in the recording process, including David Fridmann and Jerry Harrison. Critics began labelling Creeper Lagoon as the natural successors to the hugely popular Third Eye Blind, although sales of their second album failed to break the band out of their cult status. The band broke up following a tour in support of the album, leaving Laguna to continue recording under the Creeper Lagoon name. He recruited new musicians Miles Tuffli (guitar), Rachel Lastimosa (bass), and Jason Bassler (drums), and recorded the Remember The Future EP for the Arena Rock Records label.
